Situated in the central-north west Aegean, Skopelos is part of the Sporades
chain of islands and has 67 kilometers (40 miles) or rugged coastline,
being 17 km long and 8 km wide. There are direct flights from the UK to nearby Skiathos island from where it is a 30 minute hop by hydrofoil to the port town of Skopelos. Alernatively, the island can also bea easily accessed by hydrofoil / katamaran / ferry from the mainland. THE ISLAND Skopelos
is a paradise where the green of pine trees and dense forest mix with
the deep blue of sea and sky - in fact, Skopelos has been named (by the
Iinternational Organization of Biopolitics) as the "Green & Blue
island". This
is an island of escaping from the pressures of modern life and relaxing
in peaceful, serene surroundings where you set the pace. THE TOWN The
capital town is actually a charming village with whitewashed houses,
red tile roofs, balconies, fountains, narrow allies and climbing steps. Overlooking
the town is the "Kastro" the ruins of a fortress built in 340 BC by
philip II of Makedon and where the oldest church on the island now sits. There are just over 3.000 permanent residents of Skopelos Town and beacause of the steep slopes a good portion is inaccessible to vehicles. THE ARCHITECTURE The
traditional architecture of Skopelos preserved to this day dates from
the second of the 18th century and primarily from the 19th and 20 th
century.
On the basis of its morphological and structural characteristics is
distinguished into two basic categories, with the liberation of the
island from the Turks as its principal point: The popular and the
neoclassical architecture. The
popular architecture of Skopelos belongs to the type of the northern
Greek architecture, adjusted of course to the local condition and
peculiarities of the island and does not have any relation to the local
architecture of the Aegean islands, which had developed in the southern
island, mainly in the Cyclades, but also in the neighboring Skyros. The
differentiation of the architecture of the Northern Sporades from that
of the Southern Aegean Island is due mainly to the climatic conditions
of the area, namely the colder climate of the North Aegean and also its vicinity with Pilion and the strong influence which it exercised upon the them.
