The ancient island of Ikos which is later (16th century) referred to as Liadromia or Chiliodromia and from 1831, as Alonissos, is the only inhabited island in the National Marine Park.
The history of the region, as of all the islands of Northern Sporades, is important. The oldest findings are from the Stone Age, when the islands joined to the Pelio Peninsula. Tools are petrified bones from the Middle Stone Age have been found at Kokkinokastro on Alonissos. These are possibly the oldest findings indicating human settlement in the Aegean. Signs of a New Stone Age settlement have been discovered in the bay of Saint Peter on the island of Kyra Panagia.
Alonissos (Liadromia) is a picturesque green island of the Northern Sporades, which covers an area of 64 square kilometers. The rest of the area, of 80 sq. km is covered by the following small islands that surround it (Peristera16 sq. km, Kyra-Panagia 25 sq. km, Gioura 14 sq. km, Skantzoura 12 sq. km, Piperi 8 sq. km, Psathoura1 sq. km, Dio Adelfi 3 sq. km etc). The highest point of the island is the mountain Kouvouli with an altitude of 476 meters with smaller mountains consisting of Geladias 456 m, Tourkovigla 343 m, Kalovoulos 355 m, Vouno 255 m etc.
The inhabited area consists of Patitiri, which is the capital of Alonissos, the adjacent villages of Rsoum and Votsi and also old Alonissos and the seaside resorts of Steni-vala and Kalamakia. It is in these settlements that the population of about 3000 people is mainly spread. There are also many isolated cottages, as well, as small picturesque churches. Alonissos is covered with pine trees, olive trees, almond-trees, holm oaks, mastic-trees, arbutus bushes and also fruit-bearing trees. Alonnisos is the third island after Skiathos and Skopelos and the quietest inhabited island in the group of islands known as Sporades. Patitiri, where most of the inhabitants live, is a bustling little harbour surrounded by steep rock formations with many taverns, shops, cafes and even a small pebbly beach. The heart of the island is here, where the visitor can arrange all excursions, boat trips, and car and bike rental or take the water taxis which leave every morning for the various beaches. Alonnisos has many beaches which boast crystal clear waters with pine trees that almost reach right down to the sea edge. Most of the beaches have small, simple taverns and all are pebbly with the exception of one which is sandy! Half-way up the island, on the south east coast again, there is the little fishing village and pretty harbour of Steni Vala. Here, there are several excellent tavernas and the harbour usually is the temporary home of yachts and fishing boats that are in the area. The Old Village is 4 km from Patitiri, perched on a hillside with spectacular views over Skopelos Island and the Aegean. This was the main town and capital until 1965 when an earthquake destroyed the houses and was abandoned. Now, the houses have been restored and the little village with the narrow, cobbled streets has come to life again! Here, you can rent one of the many restored houses that have been redone in the old traditional style. Alonnisos is also the center for the Marine Park of the Aegean which was the first Marine Park to be established in Greece in 1992. There are 6 main islands in the park area: Alonnisos, Peristera, Skantzoura, Gioura, Kyra Panagia and Piperi along with 22 rocky islets. The Marine Park is home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal - the rarest mammal in Europe and an endangered species. The area surrounding Alonnisos is its natural habitat and the Monk Seal calls this special and unique area its home. The Marine Park is also home to around 300 species of fish and around 80 species of birds. Alonnisos and the surrounding islands also are proud to be the home of other rare species such as the Eleonora Falcon, Audouin Gull and a rare type of goat found on the island of Gioura. This also makes Alonnisos a favoured ecotourism destination. The National Marine Park of Alonnisos is the first to be founded in Greece. It is located in Eastern Central Greece, in the region of the North Sporades Islands. The Sporades administratively belong to the district of Skopelos in the Prefecture of Magnesia. Alonnisos is the largest island in the Park. The highest level of local government within the Park is the County Council of Alonnisos. The Park also encompasses six smaller islands (Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Skantzoura, and Piperi) and 22 uninhabited islands and rocky outcrops.
